Dishonest local trades - advice needed please

Hello,
In February we had some work done to an outbuilding which I have been using to store some tools and equipment. The tradespeople came out to quote for the job after I posted it up on one of the "trusted trader" type websites that seem to be springing up everywhere.
The tradespeople were done in a single day, but had to move some of my equipment around so that they could tidy up their mess. I had a quick look once they had gone and all of my tools appeared to be there.
Last weekend I desperately needed to use a particular piece of equipment (an easily-portable tool; it only cost me £20 but is one of the most useful tools that I own, or rather used to own) and have been unable to locate it. My partner has also had a thorough look and is convinced that the tradesmen have appropriated it as we last used it a few weeks before they visited.
The warranty on the work that was done is >10 years, and so I do not want to alienate the tradesmen should repair work be necessary, but I would like to get my tool back and I want to warn others. Can anybody please advise me on the best way to go about this? I had a similar problem about a decade ago with a tradesman pocketing a small piece of electrical equipment while my back was turned and the police didn't want to know.
Any replies or suggestions appreciated please.
Many thanks.

I know you said you both have looked for it but are you sure it has been taken and its not underneath something else or in different place to where its been kept before ?
Just out of interest whats the item ?0 -
The item is a drain spade. It was an expensive one as it is very strong (I have snapped other spades but this one doesn't even bend). It is very distinctive. I have searched top-to-bottom for it and it is nowhere to be seen. My partner has also looked (we spent a couple of hours looking) and cannot find it. There is nowhere else that I would store it and there is nothing behind or beneath which it could be concealed.0

Ask them politely whether they accidentally packed it whilst clearing up their own tools?0
