Engagement ring setting only?

Hi all,
I'm new here so hope someone can help. My partner recently proposed with a diamond (actually it was a mossanite stone but very big and beautiful.)

We're now looking to get it set and after heading to Hatton gardens (we're london based) we were quoted £700 for a platinum ring inc setting our stone.

Got to admit that shocked us a bit as our limited research had put wedding bands at £400 so we hadn't wanted to spend more than £500 max!

Possibly naive. :-(

We came home and hit the internet where you can buy the same ring settings from US Companies for £400. I know you get hit for tax but that still comes out under Hatton garden quote. There were very few in fact I think I found just one UK based seller offering setting only option.

Does anyone have any experience with buying setting abroad? Or does anyone know any cheaper but good setting only sellers in the UK? I tried the high street and they were surprisingly unhelpful.

Any advice hugely appreciated!!

So it's £400, plus import duty, plus tax of say £150, depending on how much they charge postage, plus then having to pay a jeweller to set the stone. Are you really going to save that much at the end of the day?

  • Forget the High Street jewellers. You need either an independent jeweller locally who makes as well as sells jewellery or you need to go to the Jewellery Quarter in Birmingham where there are jewellers who will set the stone for you.

You mention Hatton Garden so maybe you are close to London, a trip to Birmingham if you book train fares in advance will still be cheaper than London prices. ( If you do this try and get a train that arrives at Moor Street station then you hop onto a local train that takes you to the Jewellery Quarter )
If you go down to the woods today you better not go alone.

I would second the vote for Jewellery Quarter in Birmingham. Would just add most trains to Brum arrive at New Street and it is a two minute walk to Moor St, then two stops to Jewellery Quarter station.

Could you consider 9ct white gold rather than platinum?

Neweys in brum are fantastic! I go all the way from scotland to buy my jewellery there

My platinum ring setting was £480 from there and is fantastic!
  • Platinum is a very expensive metal - a lot of the cost will depend on the weight of the setting, rather than anything else. To compare whether you are getting a good deal for £x, you really do need to know the weight of the ring.

I've bought gemstones from this company some years ago, I know they supply settings/stones separately and will make up a piece for you. I don't see why they wouldn't quote for setting a customer supplied stone.
