Looking to get iPad mini for OH for birthday (he has said he'd like one, not just a whim :D).

Friend has offered to contribute and get a 3G one. As he'd use it quite a bit when out and about that's probably a good idea. However, I have no idea how to go about getting a 3G package. Both OH and I have work phones we use for personal so we've never needed to look into this.

Who offers them and how do we go about it?

How much does it cost? He wouldn't be a heavy user - but would be good to use in Spain quite often.

Would it automatically connect to wifi (say at home) and only go on to 3G if no wifi available?

Sorry to be such a Luddite :o. Thanks.

Oh dear this has been painful :o. Finally - have ordered a £5 Virgin SIM for UK use and as soon as it arrives I can order a TravelPass at £3 for low usage.

Hopefully that will get us over the first day or two. Have found the local branch of Orange (located on the only street I know in nearby town :D) and also Tuendi - nearby. The Orange deal looks good but not clear if you need an existing Orange account - and EE cusyomer services were useless :( . Tuendi looks good - especially if it doesn't expire. looks like it may be a pay, use and throwaway service? Which would be even better as could be used over a longer period.

Will report back to hopefully be of use to others :).

Thanks OGF for pointing me in right direction :T.

The first thing to check is which networks give you a decent 3G service at the places where you'll not be able to connect to wi-fi. All else follows from this.

Check out 3UK first - IF they have the coverage for you, they provide the cheapest data of any network, bar none. I buy a fixed price PAYG bundle that provides 12Gb (to be used within 12 months). Price? Anything from £35-£55 on a well known auction site!
