Thanks for that kerri & Be Happy, the storage heater is as was suspected to be, a 'combi' [see #13 - powered both 13a day-time and 20a night-time]

    - [#1 ""As you can see the rate 1 (day) is a lot higher than the night""]
    - [#1 ""storage heaters are constantly using power""]
    - [#8 ""main storage heater downstairs has 2 plugs going into it""]

The O/P has achieved an excellent day/night ratio by switching off the 'thermostatically controlled on demand 13a convector' at the wall but claims as a result the ""heater has gone very cold"" in which case the CXLSN should have the input turned to full and the output [damper] turned to zero and the 13a 2 kW on demand convector element turned off at the wall:

The starting point objective is to store as much of the cheap [night] stuff to be radiated during the 24 hour cycle and avoid the expensive 13a 2kW convector use although this heater will try to automatically adjust the level of input charge to compensate for changing weather conditions without user intervention. This lounge heater I assume to be the 6 bricker CXLS24N 3.4 kW model in which case it will hold 23.8kWh of cheap stored overnight heat. Get the can to charge to 23.8kWh of cheap stored heat and release that heat through the following 17 hours, is the heater now hot ?, have you reduced considerably your expensive day unit costs ? and are you the householder now warm enough ?

Yeah it looked as though the storage part was not working, so I took the cover off and found a switch that had appeared to have tripped, pressed it and hey presto came down in the morning to a lovely smell of burning dust and a really hot house. This was with the output turned to the lowest it goes too!

So yes it looks as if this heater was one of the main culprits to my high day usage, as my night usage went up to 31kw last night, which fits in with the 23.8kw of cheap stored heat that you quote. Also the boiler only turned on during the night, and we ran our washing machine at about 1am. So managed to completely turn it around in a day! 4:31 ratio now!

We have a separate electric shower anyway, so I think that heats up the water whenever you use it, so really only need the hot water for the two sinks.

Would be worth double checking on that one just in case. If that's so, then it sounds like you barley use any hot water. I'm sure ours didn't have a timer switch when it was elec only, but could be worth looking at to see if you can shorten the period it's heating water at night if that will still give you enough hot for the day.

Glad the heating seems sorted :T

  • Good I'm pleased you sussed it DalBag [#20], a couple of other comments :

    - the DUO is an excellent heater with the 13a boost facility, there when you need it and off when you don't
    - saves on real estate and wall space having other temporary or otherwise heating in the room on those magga cold days
    - the output [damper] is convective and wasteful, the best controlled heat is radiative

    Best of luck.

Cheers for all the help guys. Just to prove it wasn't a fluke, today's readings again show a day rate usage of just 4kw and a rate 2 night usage of 27. So it's pretty sorted.
