Sealant quality & Zinsser BIN for knot treatment - query.

I'll do 2Qs with 1 thread...

Q1: Do you get what you pay for when it comes to sealant?

In short, we had a tube of window sealant in that was £1.00 from the pound shop. I used it on the windows yesterday.
Inspected today to see if it's dried up well & it's dried sort of off-white. Not yellow but not white. We have white uPVC windows & it's certainly not dried white.
Hard to explain. It's not yellow, but it's lending more towards a creamy colour than bright-white.

So i know there's the saying - you get what you pay for, but things can also be overpriced.
So say, that Unibond stuff for getting on £10, is that going to be just the same thing, or better?

Q2: Have used, on the back of advice, Zinsser BIN for knot treatment before going on to prime, undercoat & paint.
We're not intending on using the BIN as the primer simply due to the price of it.

Reading the back of the tin it says that if you're just spot covering stains (we're going wood knots) then this may show through subsequent layerings unless you're using something that (& i forget the exact wording here as i've left the tin at the house) covers very well.

Is this likely just Zinsser covering their backside, or getting you to use more of the product (so more £ for them) or is it very likely that this will show through the top coat?

We'll be going with water based primer/undercoat/top coat. Johnstones Aqua stuff.

Is called knotting solution and is couple of quid so well worth it. You just apply to the knots, dries really quick.
Agree about sealant used cheap stuff in bathroom and now just over year will have to take out and use good stuff.

  • Sorry but i don't really know what you're saying (in relation to my questions).

I know you apply knotting solution to the knots. That's what i've done. I was asking about it showing through the primer/undercoat/top coat (as warned by the back of the tin). I haven't used the BIN product for a primer on the full piece due to the price of it. I used an alternative primer for that job. I've only used it for spot knotting.

Also, i take from your post that you don't know whether the more expensive stuff looks whiter than the cheap stuff & whether it performs any better/differently. You also don't say why you 'have' to remove it.

Dow corning or mapesil for your sealant - ensuring that you get the right type for the job in hand.

I've never had a complaint nor need to go back to any job having used these.

I always use forever white sealant now. Toolstation sell it.

I used a knotting solution on my skirting when I built my house (2 coats), after about a year loads of knots showed through the gloss paint so I put two coats of zinnser bin on the knots and re glossed. 14 months later still no knots showing.

We used the Zinsser BIN on our skirting boards, there were so many knots I think I did the whole board with it. Do it right once and you shouldn't have any problems. I think we got through 2-3 litres for the whole house so not a huge expense in the scheme of things.

Looking back though I do wish we had gone for wood doors and skirting, I really hate painting.
