iTunes Playlist problem

Hi
I've googled for a solution to this to no avail and it's bugging me as I'm sure it must be really simple to sort out!
I have moved iTunes from one computer to another using an external harddrive. All seems to be well and the playlists have copied over, but I am unable to edit the playlists. The "edit playlist" option is greyed out and I can't drag and drop songs into them either. I've managed to get the sidebar to display but the problem remains. I've looked through preferences and unticked the auto-sync options but this hasn't helped either.
Any ideas?
