Credit Card to Debt Collectors... time Limit?

When I was 18 I applied for a credit card and ran up a bill of around £200. Over the next two years this balance went up and down by around £50 - £100 depending on my payment and interest charges. I then moved to university and stopped making repayments. This debt was chased for a little while but since I was no longer living in my family home I never received the letters on a regular basis (and being a student and extremely poor I ignored the debt). After a short while contact to my family home stopped altogether. My question is ... is there a time period (and if so how long?) before the debt is invalid. I've heard nothing from Barclaycard for about 4 years and out of the blue received a summons from a new collections company. Where do I stand legally?

Please help asap!

the debt is valid without time limit.
However, under the statute of limitation an 'ordinary ' debt cannot be enforced after six years of no 'acknowledgement' i.e. no payments.

In other words, if you have not corresponded regarding the debt for six years, then it is stature barred.
