Credit Card to Debt Collectors... time Limit?

When I was 18 I applied for a credit card and ran up a bill of around £200. Over the next two years this balance went up and down by around £50 - £100 depending on my payment and interest charges. I then moved to university and stopped making repayments. This debt was chased for a little while but since I was no longer living in my family home I never received the letters on a regular basis (and being a student and extremely poor I ignored the debt). After a short while contact to my family home stopped altogether. My question is ... is there a time period (and if so how long?) before the debt is invalid. I've heard nothing from Barclaycard for about 4 years and out of the blue received a summons from a new collections company. Where do I stand legally?

the debt is valid without time limit.
However, under the statute of limitation an 'ordinary ' debt cannot be enforced after six years of no 'acknowledgement' i.e. no payments.0 -

In other words, if you have not corresponded regarding the debt for six years, then it is stature barred.Don't lie, thieve, cheat or steal. The Government do not like the competition.
