I like to try speaking the language whatever country I visit. I agree, without a car a 'city break' would be better, and Germany has lots of wonderful cities. Visiting a former concentration camp would not be my idea of fun, however!

I recall staying in a hotel in Friedrichshaven near Bodensee a few years ago and a very kind gentleman offered to help me when I was struggling with plates of food and steps to climb, at breakfast. This very kind voice behind me said 'Konnen ich Sie hilfen?' and I said 'Ja, danke, es ist sehr freundlich'.

  • Someone mentioned Dachau ?

My parents took me to visit when I was 8 years old. I'd say it has coloured my view of the world, and made me hate any sort of decrimination, or intolerance.

At 45, I visited Berlin (whilst on a business trip, I had a spare morning). The few bits of wall also had an impact.

If you have teenagers, in tow, these are a must I think.

Should you wish to combine Berlin with a visit to concentration camp there there is always the option of Sachsenhausen which can be reached from the Berlin city rail system.

  • Definitely seconding Europa Park for the teen, and the area around Frieburg. Depending upon where you stay, there are sometimes free travel cards thrown in. Despite only knowing a little German, we left the car at the campsite and travelled around via the uber efficient bus service/trains for a couple of days, snag and delay free.
