First time driver insurance

I am looking at purchasing my first car and insurance, 19 M. However I will be leaving to go to university in September and so I will not want to purchase it for a year as I will be leaving the car at home. I will however want to use the car when I come back occasionally during holidays or weekends.
How is it possible to get the best insurance quote for this as every time I have tried to have my parent as the named driver I am getting ridiculous quotes of £2000+
Thank you

At your age, with zero no claims bonus you're going to get "ridiculous" quotes.
The very first time I tried insuring a car (a Yugo Tempo) at the age of 17, the best quite was well in excess of £2k. This was over ten years ago.
Unfortunately, at present insurers will view you as a high risk. The only to move down their risk matrix is to get older and gain more driving experience with hopefully not making any claims.
It should also be noted that putting another named driver on your policy, maybe even putting them as the main driver could affect that person's no claims, if something happens to you or your car.
It is possible to get insurance for shorter terms, like a month for example, but these aren't exactly cheap either.:www: Progress Report :www:
Offer accepted: £107'000
Deposit: £23'000
Mortgage approved for: £84'000
Exchanged: 2/3/16

Dear jdma,
consider the car before looking for insurance. Something that young people don't usually crash.
Think older larger car like a 10y.o. Mondeo or Accord rather than Corsa or Clio,

If you are driving it that infrequently, is it possible that your mum or dad could drive it, say once a week? You could then put them as the main driver and you as a named driver, provided that they use the vehicle more than you do. That could reduce quotes?0

I found that choosing a newer car dropped the premium. Over 10 years old quotes of £2000 - £3000+.
Car under 10 years old and it got cheaper. 19 year old just passed £1300. Although you may not want a Daewoo Matiz.
Going to be a waste of money having a car sitting there unused with the insurance ticking along. Wait until you actually need the car and the quotes will be less because you will have had your licence longer and a bit older.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
You will have to either pay the cost or go without! We insured DD's car for the year in her name with her as main driver. It sat on the drive whilst she was away, but she was able to use whenever she came home for the weekend with no hassle. Her dad or I used it once a week to keep it ticking over. When renewal came up she had another years bonus.
Are you able to take your car to Uni as that way you would be using it, although I know some Unis don't allow first year students to have cars if they are living on campus.0 -

Who's DD ?0 -
The simple answer is you can't. I very much doubt you'll find anywhere that'll give you month by month insurance at your age, and even then you'll probably find it the same price as buying a full year overall.
Either you can bite the bullet and pay for the full year (after you've messed around with different cars and different excesses etc to get the cheapest price) or just be a named driver on a parent's car for when you're home.
Just remember that although you're paying huge amounts of money to have the car sat around doing nothing half the year you are accruing no claims bonus to make it cheaper in the future. Well that and the fact I'm a total petrolhead and couldn't contemplate not having a car was how I justified it to myself0 -
