Download Speeds

My current ISP is Virgin on the 60mb (soon to be upgraded to 100mb) deal.
When I do a speedtest using Speedtest.net on wireless I am getting about 44mb download speeds. When I put the superhub to modem mode and connect using an Ethernet cable I get 62mb download speeds on the same site using the same test server.
I know there will always be a loss on wireless over hard-wired, but is the loss I am experiencing within the accepted limits and is there anything I can do to reduce the loss over wireless?
When I done the wireless test I was in the same room as the superhub (about 2ft away).
Cheers.

I'm not knowledgeable about acceptable losses from wired to wireless, but I would suggest you check that your drivers for wireless card are up to date, and see if there are any software updates available for your hub.0

That is about right for your wireless connection using the superhub. That said the hub isn't the best at WiFi, you could try another router while in Modem mode.
I have the 60Mb connection and it was giving anything between 40 and 55 Mb on speedtest. I moved to Powerline adapters and get my full 62Mbs consistantly.Drinking Rum before 10am makes you

I have a Linksys WAG54S that I used before I got the Superhub, but I don't think I can use this for the purpose you suggest, RumRat?0

if you didn't do a speedtest, would you notice any difference
speedtest sites can give spurious results, eg how are you getting a 62meg speed, when your max before overheads is 60.!!

If he downgraded to 30Mbps (increasing to 50Mbps) it would be cheaper and after the upgrade still limited by the wireless. The Superhub is a known lemon for WiFi performance. You'd need to invest in a better router and probably WiFi dongles too to do 100Mbps justice.
I can't be bothered to look up the WAG54GS but from memory the top end of the G54 range was only the turbo G variety so it wouldn't be as good as the Superhub for speed although it may well have better range.0 -
I think the WAG34GS was an ADSL router..
To be honest I doubt you are going to improve anything much WiFi wise even with another router. As Closed says, you won't notice any difference in your daily use, unless of course you download large files regularly.
Be happy, there are people on 1Mb and less still in the UK.Drinking Rum before 10am makes you

I was actually thinking of moving to BT (I already have my phone with them). Although the most I can get with BT is up to 38mb (estimated at 22-31mb actual expected download speed).
This is only £23 pm (£16 for first 3), compared with £30 pm with Virgin, but then I save again as then I don't have to pay for BT Sports and BT say they are totally unlimited, where as Virgin slow you down at peak times, especially if you have the audacity to download something.
Closed: Everyday surfing no I don't notice much difference, where I do notice difference, is playing FIFA on the PS3. When I used the Linksys with up 8mb, I had no problems, but this last year since moving to Virgin I experience really bad lag. Also I use Filezila FTP to download and the most speed I can get from there is about 3-5mb, although I'm unsure if that's because of Filezilla or the Superhub.0 -
Hi Fergie76
Virgin no longer traffic manage download speeds on 30Mb connections and above. See here: http://my.virginmedia.com/traffic-management/traffic-management-policy-30Mb-or-higher.html
Why don't you move your BT number over to Virgin to save paying their line rental, or even Vonage who work out far cheaper than BT per month and also give you inclusive minutes?0 -
Depends on what network card and super hub settings you haveset.Wired I get 126Mbps and 112Mbps wireless using a 300mbs setting on the superhub.Your proberbly only using 100mbs0

Also, does your laptop actually have a wireless N card in?. If not, then you will be using wireless G with a max. speed of 54Mb.Never Knowingly Understood.
