Opinions please - alternative to party bags

Hello lovely people, I'd like your opinion please.
I have 10 children attending my 5 year old dd's birthday party. Instead of party bags I have bought books instead. Great deals in The Works.
Anyway, I was thinking of writing a ' Thank you for attending my party' message inside each book with my dd's name.
How would you feel about your child having such a message permanetly written a book? Is it spoiling the book? Abit over the top? Or a lovely way to remember the party and birthday girl?

I think thats a lovely idea - when my DD got books as presents from her teachers in primary school they were inscribed by the teacher, and my DD loved it
, made the book even more special. 0 -
My dd would be very greatful and I think it's thoughtful as cheap plastic party bag stuff ends up in the bin!0

Whilst I would think it fine, there is a tiny issue in that some people don't want their kids to write in books and this might blur that message. The way round that is to create or get some inserts (book plates I think is the technical term) that you can write on and stick in. That way those parents with such rules can explain that its not the book that has been written in. However that is only if you want to be totally sensitive to an issue that might not arise - personally I'd just write it in!Adventure before Dementia!0

I wouldn't write in a book & i've always taught my son not to.
I think a book is a lovely idea.Try to be a rainbow in someone's cloud.0 -

and thinking about it some more, my first bible, given to me as a child, was inscribed, and I still have it, and treasure it. It hasn't encouraged me in the slightest to write in any of my books, I don't, and my DD doesn't either.
I do think an inscription is different to just scrawling over a book.
But if you think it might give the wrong message OP, you could print off your inscription on the computer, in a nice font etc, and insert it in the front of the book instead?0 -
Excellent idea OP - go for it.
I wouldn't worry about the "don't write in books" thing because by the age of 5, my children had received countless books with inscriptions from members of the family. The messages in the books added to their value and I still have some books inscribed to me by my grandparents when I was little!0 -
I dont think its a good idea, what if the child had already read the book?0

I think books are a great idea instead of some part bag tat!If you want it to be a reminder of the birthday why not make book marks on the day (party craft) or buy bookmarks and you or son personalise them for each guest.Life is like a bath, the longer you are in it the more wrinkly you become.0

Thank you for all the replies.
At almost 5 my dd doesn't write in books so I'm not worried about sending out that message, though thank you to the poster who thought about that point.
I will have a think about putting in a printed message though I would probably use pritt stick and if it gets torn out then the book on the first page would be torn forever.
Book marks are a good idea. Having said that, at their reading age, a book is read in one sitting (read by a parent!). The book mark will likely go missing very quickly.
eta - sorry just realised the suggestion was making book marks....good idea.
Will def go with a message as it seems that you all agree that you would love a personal message. I'm going to write it because I know I'll be asking for trouble if I get dd to add her name....and put the idea of writing her name in all her books!!Dave Ramsey Fan[/COLOR]0
