Hi

I am with Santander 123 and have an 18 month 0% on purchases credit card.

should i use credit card to pay monthly council tax and save money in 3% paying account (or Nationwide 5% paying account etc ?)

I have previously always paid monthly DD from current account).

seeing it written down it seems obvious i should, but I am hesitant, not sure why, I think it just seems strange paying council tax with credit card but its just another bill/payment right?

TIA :D

Some Councils charge a fee for paying by credit card. Does yours?

Assuming yours doesn't charge, how much will you make over the year?
  • just had a look on council web site, no charge for credit cards.

I would be making the 3% (less tax) over the 18 months

    saving 1606.99 * 3% /12 X 18 months = 72.31 less 20% tax = £57.85

    .................:o is that right?

    lol

I have approx 12k of credit over 2 cards and can pay it off anytime, not really done it before though and it seems so strange to look at my account and see I owe money (albeit I am able to pay it off if necessary) which I am paying minimum payments on.

    I don't think so.

Your real saving will come in months 13-18 won't it? You're not gaining as much in the first 10-12 months since you'd have the money in the 1-2-3 account anyway...being as you already have the option of paying monthly by DD.

I pay mine on a points credit card and use the points to treat myself (don't pay extra for using it)
Paid off the last of my unsecured debts in 2016. Then saved up and bought a property. Current aim is to pay off my mortgage as early as possible. Currently over paying every month. Mortgage due to be paid off in 2036 hoping to get it paid off much earlier. Set up my own bespoke spreadsheet to manage my money.

My council will NOT accept payment by credit card but I do get cash back on my payment by direct debit from my santander 123 current account. Every little helps.
