Anywhere that will cash a Indian issued cheque in the UK?

I've received a cheque from Indian in Indian rupees it was my Mums money after she died. However my bank will not cash it, due to rupee currency legalities. Are there any other service that will cash an Indian cheque in the UK? I don't mind paying a commission fee if required. Thank you for your help.

Indian rupees is a prohibited currency in UK - whilst you can get rupees cash all the ones I dealt with them had a warning that the notes were issued at your own risk if confiscated by their immigration/passport control.
So in my opinion this will be very difficult to cash.

Is the amount worth a trip to India to open a local bank account?

Try contacting ICICI bank UK or Bank of Baroda UK.

I'd personally go with ICICI as I've had dealings with them in the past and they are professional and explained everything in great detail.

I know there are branches of ICICI and Bank of Baroda in Manchester and London.

    Good luck.
  • You could try bank of Punjab in London

Rupees is a closed currency, which I think means they can't be taken out of India.

Not sure how it works with a cheque though.

Presumably there are inheritance laws that need to be obeyed to start with. Unless you can prove you are the rightful heir, no bank would cash the cheque even if there were no currency restrictions.
