Financial help with moving in to work - advise

Hi all

I've been on ESA & DLA and now I am well again, I cancelled my DLA in Nov and I started looking for work. I have just been offered a new job for £14,200 a year. Is there any way I can get financial help in the first few weeks/month to help me adjust?

Any advise welcome, I've never been on benefits before, as such I've never come off them, so it's all new to me.

  • That salary might allow you to claim Working Tax Credits or a reduction on your Council Tax. Have a look here, as a starting point: https://www.gov.uk/moving-from-benefits-to-work/support-when-you-start-working.

I'd pay the essential bills and tell the others they will have to wait.

I don't know about financial assistance but you can do things now such as go through your food cupboards and see how little you can get away with buying until pay day. Or if you need to buy go for basics and budget ranges.

Why did you cancel your DLA? You can still receive this whilst working.

How many hours will you be working in your new job?

I was claiming DLA whilst I was unwell and unable to work, as soon as I felt I could start looking to go back to work I cancelled it. I could have kept the DLA [and that was the advise of the job centre] and claimed disability working tax credits, but it would have been dishonest as I don't think I should be claiming it, now I am 'repaired'.

And I'll be back to 37.5hrs per week

DLA can be claimed in work.
If, of course, you still fit the criteria - there is absolutely nothing saying you can't.
  • Hi

See this is a issue with anyone that is returning to work weather it being from ESA ..DLA or JSA.... the minute you accept a job and advise the job centre and housing benefits ...everything stops immediately...leading to having very limited funds in the first place and everyone wanting paying.. ie landlord, council tax. travel expenses and food until you get yourself the first pay check...you might even be lucky not to get into debt..

the system keeps banging on about getting ppl back to work then the system needs to support ppl get back into work with paying one clear month of HB plus what ever other benefits that have been paid
  • Has housing benefit changed? I thought you notify of a change of circumstances and there is a run on period?

Isn't ESA the same as JSA, you get a few weeks run on too?

Please don't quote me on it but from what I've seen, the minute you inform them, that's when they stop close the claim / file and make final payment....there's no run off period

To reiterate for the second time in this thread - DLA/PIP can be claimed while in work.
Getting a job does not stop DLA or PIP.
(If you get a job refereeing football, and you were claiming because you were blind, it may clearly raise doubts)
