Insurance legal cover, are tenancy issues included?

Options
I'm a tenant living in my home under an assured shorthold tenancy. I've got family legal protection insurance.

Insured is:
Any infringement of your legal rights arising from or relating to your ownership or occupation of your principal place of residence

Not insured is:
Claims arising from or relating to ... A lease or license to occupy land or property.

Does that mean tenancy legal queries aren't covered, does an assured shorthold tenancy come under a lease or license?

Thanks for your help.

Legal Expenses normally covers any topic on the advice line and only selected topics to actually pursue a claim. Generally you'd call the advice line first who tell you the initial steps to take and if those dont work if the issue is likely to be covered by the policy.

A tenancy issue is potentially covered by either the property section or the contract dispute one.

I would ring the legal provider and ask.

Normally this type of policy is completely separate to your home insurance so an enquiry or claim will not impact your contents insurance in the future and would not need to be declared to future insurers - but check policy t&cs to be sure.

So there should be no harm ringing them to find out if you are covered.
  • Thanks InsideInsurance and *Scarlett.

The legal cover was purchased along with my home contents insurance but I think it's separate.

I rung them and they say an assured shorthold tenancy isn't covered, not even on the advice line which is all I'd need, due to the clause excluding "A lease or license to occupy land or property."

I've not come across an assured tenancy being called a lease before, everyone normally just says tenancy. I think of buying a leasehold flat when someone says lease.

What's the actual problem with your tenancy as there's a section on MSE frequented by experts who give free advice on tenancy problems for either tenants or landlords
