saving texts from Sony Ericsson Xperia??

Hi,
I've been trying for weeks to see if there is a way of saving my texts from my Sony Ericsson Xperia (pretty sure it is X8) to pc with no luck.
Have tried Which?'s tech. helpline - no use; done the backup and restore thing on the phone which seemed promising until you plug it into pc - nothing except a file that can't be read - SBF file or something. Sony website and live chat with them confirmed this and said only phones can understand that language so I did wonder about putting the memory card into new phone and then using pc companion but am worried the texts will then just disappear from phone if it doesn't work; they also confirmed that the phones PC Companion (which I've tried but you cannot view the text folder) does not do it; they did say to get an app on new phone which will get them off old phone but would not tell me how or how to find it anything so any help on that would be great (I've never used apps yet!).
I've got a mental block over starting to use my new phone (Xperia M) until I've sorted this; also got a mini sim card for new, normal for current but with same number so am wondering how it will work having both in at the same time - I know, I should be brave and just do it!
has anybody managed to do transfer texts from these phones?
