Personally, I'd never buy an iMac unless there was no other option. I hate the reflectiveness of their glossy screens and, even if you can live with that, when the computer module becomes obsolete you have to throw away the display along with the machine despite the fact that that bit probably has many years' life left in it.:D
Ultimately, each to their own.
If its a matter of obsolete then some of the higher iMacs can be used as a monitor and so as long as the electronics are working then no need to throw it away.
Screen technology moves on though as well as computer and whilst the two may not move at exactly the same time, as long as you dont want to be on the bleeding edge of technology then you can just replace the whole unit when you feel sufficient progress has been made in all areas.
Back in my teens and early 20s I used to build my own machines and vowed that I would never buy an off the shelf machine let alone an all in one computer. Times moved on though and there is a convenience of buying something that comes in 1 box with just 1 wire to connect, press a button and you've everything set up and running in under 10 minutes.
The glossy screen can be a pain and does make positioning more challenging but you can also get a film to put on the screen to remove the reflections if it bothers you that much0
