New DVD Burner not working in pc

Bought daughter the NEC 3500A burner for Christmas. She tried installing it on her Win 98SE pc but had lots of problems with getting the software (Nero) to recognise it. Finally she gave up.
I've now tried it in my pc (I'd already successfully installed a similar drive). Her drive doesn't seem to wind up to speed like mine when a CD or DVD is inserted but sits making a clicking noise.
After so long I'm sure the supplier will give me a replacement or help in sorting out the problem (NOT). So I guess it is out with the big screwdriver and hammer to threaten it into submission.
Anyone any suggestions as to what may be wrong and if it can be fixed on a diy basis as I guess I've lost the money anyway?

Try the retailer anyway, they may replace it.
Did it come with its own version of nero as one drive will not run with the version supplied for another drive?0 -
Thanks Culpepper.
Bought from micro direct, good price but other mse's have had problems trying to resolve when items were dead on arrival let alone 5 months later. Yep, the software was a pukka Nero CD bought for the exercise.
The problem seems to be that the drive does not spin up to speed when a cd or dvd is inserted so I guess it's a mechanical problem. That's why thought it might need screwdriver and hammer!Nice to save.0 -
Might be dirt on the lens, which is why it's struggling to read the disc. Could be worth getting a cleaning kit from your local computer store.
Ideally though I'd send it back."Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0 -
Go to Nero Info Tool in the Nero Toolkit and check the status of the System ASPI.

I just fixed my NEC3500. It shares an IDE cable with a much older sony DVD drive. I had the sony set to be slave and the NEC set to master via the jumpers on the back of the drives. My mistake was to connect the slave drive at the end of the cable and the master drive towards the middle. This is not recommended and is clearly written on my cables. The Sony drive managed to cope with the misconfiguration but the NEC acted strange never reading a thing.
It could also have been entirely caused by dirty a lens which I cleaned with isopropanol and a tissue prior to giving it one last try. I got lucky.

Oh boy. My daughter's pc has just gone awol, at least the monitor has stopped displaying anything. As it's quite old she is thinking of replacing it with a laptop, for flexibility. So the dvd problem is history, or at least it's now my problem.
I've tried her drive in place of my rewriter, it's the same model with the switches set the same. Mine continues to work well when I refit it, hers doesn't (gives same symptoms as in her pc) so it looks like a problem within the drive. I'm using it as a single device on that IDE controller.
I would guess its's not the lens as it's only had the nero disc loaded a few times to try to load the writing software. The disc appears to be clean, is always stored in its packet and there have been no sticky fingers on the surface.
Still not sure what the next step is but please keep the suggestions coming. All are gratefully received.Nice to save.0
