Combi boiler & using water......

A year ago I had a loft conversion done and had to get rid of my hot water tank to make way for the stairs and, in doing so, had to have a combi boiler installed.

Water pressure is great through the house but I have a query on the best way to use hot water now.

When we run water in the upstairs and loft bathrooms, it wastes about a sink full of water before hot comes through. Not much we can do about this unfortunately.

The same happens downstairs in the kitchen but I'm at home with kids so am washing up 3 or 4 times a day. Is it more cost effective to run the tap and waste a bowl of water before getting to the hot and obviously have the cost of gas firing up the boiler or should I simply fill my kettle and use around a kW of electricity but not waste any water?

Might seem a small thing to try and work out but when you're washing up as much as I do, it's worth knowing!!

Any thoughts??

  • You won't use a kW to boil the kettle.
If it is a 2kW kettle and it takes 3 minutes to boil it will use 100 watts of electricity depending what you pay per kW about 1.5p
