G Plan sofa grubby.

I want to hand wash the removable covers on the arms of my Gplan sofa even though it tells me this is a no no on the care label. Has anyone risked doing this? How did it turn out? They are jut getting grubby even though the cushion covers are fine.

When you say removable arm covers, are they just arm caps or full covers for the arms?

If it helps I did once risk putting the covers that proclaimed dry clean only from my Multiyork Suite into the washing machine on a very low temp. wash. This was only after I'd had washed a couple of the arm caps just to test the results, which were good.

With fitted covers, the secret is to put them back whilst still a little bit damp as once fully dry, they are much more difficult to get back on.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

Well bit hard to describe , the arms have a padded piece that fits right over the arm of the chair , these not only zip off the chair they have a zip at the back so the interior padding can be taken out completely . It says that these zips are not for washing/cleaning purposes but for ease of manufacture??? It does say professional cleaning only ,no washing or dry cleaning I guess I'm going to have to weigh up my chances of getting away with it lol

Oh, I see what you mean now. Most furniture manufacturer's say the same about zipped seat cushions & backs, that the zips are only there for aiding manufacturer to cover said seat & back cushions.

Do you have an idea of what the actual fabric is, ie: chenille or velvet upholstery, damask, cotton?

Some upholstery fabrics are covered with a stiff backing & this type of fabric wouldn't be suitable for washing, though might come up well using a steam cleaner.

  • I would try a good quality car upholstery cleaner and clean them in situ - be careful not to get them too wet.
  • I have the same type of suite and last summer I washed those parts in my machine on a low temperature wash without any problems.
