Home Security Systems - Which to get/how to install?

Hi all,

I am thinking about installing a home security system in a standard 3 bedroom property.

I have researched on the internet and they seem to be 'off the shelf' type systems.

How do you go about purchasing the type of security you need and do the companies install it for you? I imagine they can assess best locations to place it in etc.

Sorry I am quite new to this so am seeking some sound advice.

Any help would be appreciated.

After a bit of research, we've purchased the Yale home premium alarm kit recently, we got it from Screwfix (http://www.screwfix.com/p/yale-premium-wireless-4-room-alarm-kit/54473?kpid=54473&cm_mmc=Google-_-Product%20Listing%20Ads-_-Sales%20Tracking-_-sales%20tracking%20url&gclid=CIqMk6KZor0CFaoewwodhCUAGw) as it was cheapest there at the time but you can get it from Amazon etc.


It's really easy to set up, as it comes with a DVD explaining it all. What we liked was the fact that you can easily choose to buy and add other parts as you need. It tells you how to place the different parts, and it's just like attaching anything else i.e. a couple of screws. I'm sure you could get any handyperson to do the fixing if needed rather than pay expensive alarm companies.


The kit comes with a siren, a dummy siren, 2 door contacts, and 2 PIRs. You also get the control panel which you plug your phoneline into, and you record a message so that if it is triggered, as well as setting off the siren it rings numbers of your choosing to alert you. We bought an extra door contact because we have 3 doors, a smoke alarm, and also 2 wireless key fobs so we can set it easily as we rush out the house...

When I was looking at an alarm system, someone suggested the alternative of a CCTV system and that's what I went for.

Alarms serve a purpose as a deterrent but are so often ignored and there's no saying you can get back home if you are alert to it sounding by it contacting your mobile.

At least with CCTV, in addition to the obvious deterrent you may actually have something you can then act on.

Mine is viewable on my mobile anywhere in the world.. It's also come in handy sorting out my kids disputes when they fall out while playing on the garden

IMHO you would be better off going for a kit by ESP - Infinite Plus.

Wirefree system apart from the cable to the bell box, basic system that you cann add to aas you see fit from extra detectors to GSM auto diallers.

I agree with the other guys. CCTV provides that vital evidence you may need, where as alarm is just a siren with no clues as to what happened!

I have a very good system From QRcctv.co.uk They installed it for me and i can watch it from any where in the world.

Before that I bought a cheap system from Maplin. It worked well for a few months and never again!

My advice would be that invest in a good system that will last you at least 5 years! and not a cheap alternative for one summer or 2!
