Hi, I have BT home hub 5 and infinity 2 but the wifi signal is not that great downstairs.
I have another wireless router (netgear) that virgin sent me a while back but i never set it up.
Can i some how make use of this router and increase the wifi signal downstairs or even use it and plug in devices into the ports in the back?
Thanks

you will need to give us the Netgear model no.

Step 1. Open your web browser on your PC.
step 2. type in the top address bar "www.google.co.uk"
step 3. type on the google page "how to use 2 routers together" or similar phrases.
step 4. open each link in a new tab/window until you find one that answers you fully.
The info is there.

Tip: Long ethernet cables are available via amazon for about £3 for 40m long.
Using the same ssid/password/channel works and the pc's should auto join the strongest network.
using different ssid/password/channel works too.0 -
you can either use the second router as a wireless bridge or as a wireless distributed system which halves the bandwidth. You generally want firewall and routing services to be off on the second router.
In my experience, both systems are hard and time consuming to set up, even when you know what your doing.0 -
Thanks
Would it halve the bandwidth of the wireless signal it is transmitting or halve even what the wired connections are receiving from the router already?0 -
IIRC not many "routers" will allow you to use the wireless access point as a repeater. In my case, I had to link the switches together via ethernet cable.
Then it was straightforward -- the "router" that isn't routing needs to be given an IP address on the same subnet as the routing router, and DHCP needs to be turned off on the non-routing "router".0 -

I don't have the kit to do it wirelessly, but linking the routers via Ethernet (and configuring them) was trivially easy.0 -
you want to use the equipment you have ... and not spend £££ , I tend to be the same ;-)
but it might be easier to just get some wifi extenders, the mains plug in type generally work well.
I am not certain , but i Think the Router WGR614 will work as a repeater ....

If wireless reception is poor upstairs then the old router might not work too good as a repeater since the signal it receives might not be good..
instead bridge the gap with Homeplug adaptors from downstairs to upstairs, which then plugs into the router upstairs (on wan port) to give the extended range - by way of ensure only downstairs is set as dhcp, but give upstairs a ssid so can differentiate between upstairs \ downstairs access points...0 -

Yes that was basically it mate, i had the spare router so thought maybe i can use that instead of buying wifi extenders or powerline adapters
Sounds like it might be too complex for me though, so maybe a wifi extender+powerline is the way to go0
