Driving after a ruptured cerebral aneurysm

Hi
I suffered from a ruptured cerebral aneurysm in November last year and since then I've been told I can't drive.
I contacted the DVLA & notified them. They wrote to my consultant, he saw me on the 28th Feb and returned their report followibg that.
I've just rdceived a letter today telling me that they've received the medical information and it will take at least 12 weeks to review this and contact me.
I was very lucky and I don't appear to have suffered any long term effects following the ruptured aneurysm & I returned to work four weeks ago.
I've tried emailing the DVLA for more information and an indication on timescale but the responses I get back are vague & ambiguous.
Does anyone have any experience of this & can give me any indication of when they are likely to let me drive ?
When I saw the consultant he said they weigh up the risk of me having a seizure following the aneurysm but he also said that as I hadn't had a seizure yet it was very unlikely so surely it should be a case of the haemorrhage happened then, no side effects, clean bill of health from consultant therefore ......
Any advice appreciated
Thanks
Jen

You are very lucky to have survived this! A relative of mine had this happen (he was unaware he even had the aneurysm until it ruptured) and the ending was not so good..:(

I hope you can drive again. If the consultant says you are unlikely to have another seizure it sounds promising.

my cousin had the same thing when she was about 19. She got the go-ahead to drive about six months later at a follow-up visit to the consultant. oh, and she is approaching fifty now - fit as a fiddle and not had any problems.
best of luck for the future OP.
  • This happened to a friend of mine last year. It was six months later that the consultant agreed he could drive again, and I think he had some driving assessments done by Occupational Therapy before he got the final go ahead from the consultant. I don't think the DVLA caused any delay once he had been ok'd to drive. Unfortunately I don't know exactly what the process was about contacting them.

Congratulations on making such a speedy recovery.

Glad that you've made such a good recovery so far since your ruptured aneurysm in November.

Given that was only 5 months ago, it is still early days in terms of recovery and whilst you might be feeling virtually back to normal and no doubt frustrated at being held back from driving unfortunately I think you've just got to run with however long the piece of string is in terms of how quickly they review it and get back to you.

I think they both err on the side of caution and have bureaucratic processes to follow.

My OH was back driving 6 months after a cerebral infarction (no seizures), and ok to fly again - but no diving anymore!

Fingers crossed it isn't too long.
