help with unregistering from Skype

Ok, I clicked on Skype app on my new HP laptop on the start screen and registered. Now when I click the start screen Skype tile I have a page that shows calls, contacts and various links to upgrades and that's it, nothing at all to explain how Skype works. Today I have a message from someone I don't know asking to add me as a contact, how did they contact me? Have been on Skype website and read through a few pages but it still doesn't really explain how to get started or what I'm supposed to do. It mentioned settings to block unknown people via 'tools' but I can't even find tools. It also said something about my name and contact details appearing in a directory, if that is true and anyone can access my details I'd rather get rid of Skype.

I only set it up so my nephew could talk to his friend whilst playing his PS3 but it's just so much hassle. Can anyone tell me how to unregister as I couldn't find that out either? I have windows 8.1 if that helps.

Tools - Options - Privacy and select "only allow people in my Contacts list to contact me". Also click advanced tab for more choices.

Did you not Google for info about deleting account

Hi, thanks for replies, there is no tools. I have just a page with 'recent, favourites, people' headings and links to upgrade and that is it, there is nothing to tell me how to use Skype. Logged into Skype website but no joy there either, I just can't seem to find a simple guide on 'how to use Skype' 'Getting started' just tells you what Skype can do.

Upshot is I don't want Skype at all now and want to unsubscribe. The above link takes me to a page I read earlier but was unhappy with as all it says is replace profile with gobbledegook and contact customer services to remove name from directory which takes 2 weeks! Is there nothing better than that? Surely I should be able to just delete my account?

Also can someone tell me how can someone I don't know send me a message asking to add me to their contacts? Have they randomly taken my details from the directory? is it like spam? Sorry if that's a silly question!

Hoping someone can help me just get rid of Skype!

As far as I can see, you can hide or stop people from finding you but i'll be damned if I could find a way to unsubscribe totally.

After a bit of research I've discovered I can't fully unsubscribe! Apparently I can only alter my profile and ask for my name to be removed from directory however Skype retain all private information such as name, number, email. Account cannot be removed or deleted.

Regards tools it still doesn't exist even when I sign in, I have 'explore, prices, downloads, support' as headings. I had imagined when I first registered I would get a step by step guide as to how to use Skype but I got nothing at all, I just have a page with calls, contacts and links to upgrade to paid services. I did get an email welcoming me to Skype but the 'get started' link just told me what Skype was and again links to upgrade to add credit!

Thanks for replies (sorry for not using paragraphs but for some odd reason I can't leave a space between lines of text!)

when you get a home phone , you end up on the directory or you go ex directory.

If you are in the directory people can look up your number or just numbers at random to call you. Skype works in a similar way.

If you receive messages through Skype then you can just delete Skype from your computer and it will stop that.

It would be a shame if you did as Skype is a very useful tool, free phone / video calls to America / New Zealand ...... it will do for me!

there are links to using Skype below , I really hope you try them out

I think advice given has been for Skype Desktop and it sounds to me that OP has the Skype Metro app- are you on Windows 8?

While signed into the Skype app if you scroll to the top right hand corner and click on settings, this gives you some more options to tinker with things. But it still isn't IMO very user friendly.

The good news is even on Win 8 you can download Skype Desktop and use that instead, it is way more user friendly. You can add a shortcut on your desktop too unlike the app which can only be started from the start screen.
