Gammon

How do you cook gammon? Do you just fry it in a pan? I'm thinking of trying my girls with it. Is it too salty for young children?

Was going to make chips and peas with it.

  • Grill, or fry. We always add an egg and a slice of real fresh pineapple as well!

    Goes well with baked beans

Thanks for that. Always on the lookout for new things for my girls to try, they are a bit stuck in their ways.

My DH is of Irish heritage. This is his recipe for a boiled gammon joint ( really good value at Aldi at the moment. ) You need a very large soup pot with a lid . Cover gammon in cold water . bring to the boil & discard the water after a couple of minutes . This gets rid of some of the salt. Next add 1 large finely chopped onion , 2 chopped carrots , one chopped leak , 2 chopped sticks of celery, chopped parsley , some dried mixed herbs ,approx. a handful of dried barley & red lentils ( mixed ) . Scrub about 6 medium sized Rooster potatoes & add to pot & cover in water.
Bring all of this to the boil on top of the stove & simmer for an hour.
After the hour remove the potatoes & set aside . Add a whole savoy cabbage ( cut into quarters ) to the pan & simmer for approx 3/4 of an hour. Put the potatoes back in for a few minutes to reheat .
The soup is absolutely delicious served first or at lunchtime .. The gammon can be sliced & served with the cabbage & potatoes . With mustard or brown sauce it's just great !

The gammon soup can have cubes of bread and or cheese in, which make it extra delicious.

The cheese melts so doesn't need to be in the first flush of youth.

You can cook it (the sliced variety) in the oven as well Turn after 10-15 minutes and add the pineapple for the last 10

Get good quality stuff - not the cheapo reconstituted muck.

Kids may prefer the unsmoked version

Add onions to pan, red hot, mind the children out of the way
    Add garlic, then chicken.

Use one Coconut blaock, add water and spices, garam masala chilli and coriander as required.

Add Chopped pineapple as well as raisens.

    Boiled rice

    Serve

I am, off home now as BoPette is outside, becasue the cat, Raffles, has some live vermin and snakes inthe house! I car share, so cannot leave earlier!
