I have had a Toshiba Satellite L450-18d for some years now but only really used it the last six months. I'm very happy with it for what I want.

Our PC at home is in the process of dying so my husband wants to have a laptop of his own. He is adamant he does not want touchscreen.

We both know tiddly squat about computers and every time I google its all about windows 8 and how touchscreen is needed for best results. It's just too much for me to understand. He just wants to get a laptop that is like mine but they are discontinued.

Will we need to buy an secondhand laptop to get what he wants ?

None touch screen laptops are not discontinued .
Windows 8 works on non touch screen laptops and a touch screen is not required for best results .
Toshiba make loads of laptops that are not touchscreen .

Fingers on computer screens are my idea of hell.

I have just bought a new laptop and didn't have any trouble getting a non touch screen

With a few tweeks, Windows 8 is perfectly usable with a mouse or a touch pad.

I've seen this too, but in my view it's the wrong way round.

If you have/want a touchscreen device, then Windows 8 is apparently much better than Windows 7. So it would be true to say that if you have a touchscreen and want to run a variety of Windows, then you want Windows 8 (or 8.1) for best results.

But the converse does not apply- Windows 8 is usable without a touchscreen, and I don't think a lack of touchscreen makes it any less usable.

I've got a desktop without touchscreen and wife has laptop with touchscreen both running windows 8.1. I can't say that the laptop has a big advantage over desktop in fact when I use laptop I very rarely use touchscreen. We have a mouse connected to laptop I would probably use touchscreen more if we didn't.

PC's are rarely in the process of dying, they either work, or they don't.

What's wrong with it? slow - is fixable.

    Look here http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/test-centre/laptop/3214583/14-best-budget-laptops-of-2014/
Plus go to a store to see and try before you buy.
  • I bought a Notebook with touch screen, not because I particularly wanted touch screen, but because the price was right.

I then installed Classic Shell, and you can hardly tell the touch screen is there.

It looks and works much like the Win 7 PC I have at work.
