Little used phone line from ISDN days goes dead. Try a couple of fixed phones in the socket to check. Still dead.

Call up and report fault from mobile - appointment in a couple of days. Take day off work. No show.

Call up 2nd time - new appointment. Arrange to work from home. No show.

Call up third time - new appointment. Arrange to work from home. No show.

Call up 4th time. Agent insists the appointment can't be rescheduled and I have to log a new fault. New appointment. Day off work. No show.

Complaint letter to BT who take ages investigating. Make complaint to the comms regulator who orders BT to cancel all line rental charges and pay me £150 compo.

By now the line is still dead and I refuse to pay for the line rental. BT then "disconnect" me for non-payment and demand the £60ish outstanding. We had a few letters from debt collectors which with all their veiled threats go straight into the bin. My BT account still shows the £60ish debt. I've waited a year or two now for a doorstep visit that they keep promising which is disappointing as the sellotape holding up the photocopy of the regulators decision letter by the front door has gone all yellow.

A mate who works for BT blames a lot of it on BT Openreach but I don't know how true this is and quite frankly that wasn't my issue.
Openreach handle all the work on exchanges and lines. It's their incompetence that leads to the vast majority of complains about ADSL and FTTC broadband from ANY provider. They are not public facing and not contactable or answerable to the public. Quite what Ofcom thought they were doing when they set up that structure is beyond me.
