Clematis next to mint - is it ok?

I just planted a clematis next to some mint, and then read somewhere that mint shouldnt go near it, but there was no explanation why. So, does anyone know why? Its got rhubarb on the other side of it. Is that ok?!

  • Hi,

Not really sure about why not near Clematis, but it may be because mint is invasive. I suspect the mint roots will damage the clematis roots.

Is the mint planted directly into the soil or in a pot in the ground? I have mint in the front garden underneath a tree. It is restricted, however, by a gravel path (with concrete underneath) so it cannot grow too far.
  • It would be just too invasive and the mint would definitely win ! I would be tricky to weed it out from the clematis with out damaging the main stem and if you break that, the whole lot of clematis attractively climbing through a tree or along your fence ,would die back to nothing.I love mint ,can't get enough of it, in mint tea, taboulleh, mint sauce etc etc but would restrict it to a large pot and it wanders off from the place you plant it (via its runner like roots) and pops up somewhere else!
  • Oh! Thank you, Ill dig up the mint - I only just planted it there so it hasn't had time to do anything.. If it spreads that much I think Ill move it to one of my no-mans-land areas!
