I work for a large company that has a staff shop where they give large discounts on older but still new products, they will refund your money on faulty electrical items for up to one year after purchase but not on non-electrical faulty items, can they do this using their own "made up rules" so to speak?

They can't contract out your rights under the Sale of Goods Act if you are classed as a consumer when buying from the staff shop. However this act does take price into account when deciding how long something should reasonably last, so if its heavily discounted then it may be reasonable that it doesn't last as long.
Are you saying they won't refund faulty non-electrical goods under any circumstances, even if its faulty when you buy it?
Also remember it might not be wise to do something that might upset your employer if you intend to have a happy career.0 -
No they can't make up their own rules if they differ from legislation, but from what you have said, they appear to be doing more that the Sale of Goods Act requires.I work for a large company that has a staff shop where they give large discounts on older but still new products, they will refund your money on faulty electrical items for up to one year after purchase but not on non-electrical faulty items, can they do this using their own "made up rules" so to speak?
Remember that after six months it is for the buyer to prove the goods are inherently faulty.
If you do that, and they still refuse a remedy....
On the other hand, you need to decide whether you really want to take your employer to court.0 -
It isn't clear to me whether the shop is never refunding faulty non-electrical goods, or just not refunding them for the full year.0
