Didn't 'submit' self assessment, now have charge!

I'm just wondering if anyone is in the same predicament as me. I thought I had completed my online self assessment tax form, as I got the statement of how much I owe (£0 as I don't hit my tax threshold), but seems I was only 95% complete as I didn't log back in and hit submit!
Having spoken to 2 people at the self assessment department, it seems I am not alone on this and they have quite a lot of people complain that the form isn't exactly clear and easy to go back to the original screen having got your statement, and to be able to hit submit without logging back in.
I have tried to appeal the penalty but it was rejected, them basically saying it is my own stupid fault, which now yes, I understand! But surely if it's quite a common problem, then the form should be made a little simpler to show it has actually been submitted and surely this is something HMRC should address?
Has anyone else on here had the same problem? Would love to get Martin involved in this to help get the form changed!
Thanks!

I don't know of anyone who doesn't double check, even those who have used the system for a long time.
Perhaps put it in discussion time?0 -
You always get a email saying that your on-line form has been received.
So if you did not get that email it should have started a few alarm bells ringing!!!0 -
Never had to log back on to complete mine or my daughters. It's someone else's fault.0

The fact that it says that it is only 95% complete makes it fairly obvious that it's not 100% done.
If you actually read the web page at the 95% complete stage, it tell's you to click through to complete your return, rather than doing a quick scan, and making assumptions.
When it comes down to it, getting your tax correct is a job worthy of your full attention, rather than a speed-read job.0 -
Agree with all the above. This is my first year as self-employed and I was quite terrified of filling in the online form. But I found it extremely easy, straightforward and self-explanatory.0
