British gas rip off

Options
I was with British gas for my gas in my previous property which was a 1 bed flat in a house of 4 flats.. I was paying £58 a month direct debit, this was a estimate.. I had my heating on for around 6 hours a day and the cooker on for about a hour a day.. When I moved last month I gave bg my final meter reading, I recently got my final bill for £275.. This sounds ridicilousy high. I called bg and they said I was on a estimated bill and cos I lived there for only 6 months that's my bill. So over 6 months my monthly bill works out to just over £100 a month with the 58 I was paying and dividing my final bill into 6 month's... Does this sound a lot to you? I now live in a 2 bed house and have only spent £40 on gas in a month on a pre pay meter with the heating and cooker on for a similar time.. My gas is now with n power. .Please help!!

No, an extra £45 per month on top of £58 does not sound excessive for winter months where you had the heating on six hours a day. It was probably unnecessary (did you leave the heating on on a timer for months on end instead of just switching it on when it was actually cold?)

Differences in build of property and insulation and neighbours' largesse/frugality can easily lead to usages as different as you mention.

Don't forget you would not be paying £100 all year round - just four or five months.

You have learned a lesson - read your meters day to day and week to week until you get an idea of how much your property is costing you to run. You can then adjust comfort or budget to whichever you prioritise.
  • Thanks you maybe right. They did mention the age of the boiler with it been 10 years old however the boiler is as old in my new place and is on as long.. I may have to take the bullet and offer to pay it off monthly. .

OP the issue is you were on an estimated bill.......You should've given them actual meter readings every month, if that was done you more than likely wouldn't have had a big bill.
It's better to regret something I did do than to regret something that I didn’t. :EasterBun
