EDF have just told us that they are increasing our DD from £345 pcm; which is already a lot higher than I think it should be.... to....£835 pcm. According to their figures for our usage we are using less this year than last. I think we are already being overcharged. We have reduced the time our heating is on, added insulation in the loft, turned the thermostat down.
I cannot understand how we are spending so much more than we did before we moved...to a smaller house.
I have never used EDF before moving house 16 months ago and I can't fathom why we are now paying so much: I am wondering if there is a problem with our meters...

How many kwh are you using in a year for gas and electric (actual usage from meter readings, not estimates)?

The £835(and probably the£345) will because you have built up a large debit balance and they are taking measures to reduce that debt.

We need information from your bills.

    1. What figures for usage(in kWh) have they given?

    2. Look at your gas meter and on it should be M3 or cubic feet. Let us know.

    3. All details on your bills i.e meter readings, kWhs and gas units.

They will almost certainly let you pay off your debt over a longer period and reduce the £845pcm, but we need to have more information if we are to help.

I recently switched my EDF tariff to a lower one and surprisingly The Computer decided my DD should actually increase! I sent an email and got back a prompt, lengthy reply which told me lots I already knew but didn't actually address the issue. I replied and got a much more personalised email back apologising and agreeing The Computer got it wrong and reduced my DD. My guess and it is just a guess is that in my circumstances I had submitted readings just before a payment was due so I was actually in debit for the few days when The Computer did the new calculation.
If money saving starts to involve irritation or frustration the fine line between thrift and greed should be examined.

EDF’s DD calculations takes into account 3 things

    1) Previous history – which needs to be based on actual reads for it to be of any use
    2) Seasonality and weather correction are then added to the consumption
    3) Debt/Credit on account are then applied

Last year was abnormally warm so any like for like comparison year on year would see an increase in DD amount. IF you have increased the efficiency of your home it will take a year for this to have a full impact on reducing your DD.

Only been with EDF since last summer, and they have just reduced our DD from £93 to £81 p/m and refunded us £8.77 that we were in credit. Just made sure I provided regular meter readings and kept usage down. no probs.
