Cheapest way to insure second car

Good morning,
I am starting a new job soon and the requirement of the job is to have a car, even though the job is a mile from home I have to travel between sites within a couple of miles of each other. I will probably do no more than 5 miles on an average day. I am planning on buying an old car for £500.
At current I use public transport and have not owned a car for 4 years (as a result lost my 6 years NCB 4 years ago). However I am named driver on my wife's car. My new job starts the day before my wife's car insurance runs out.
What is the cheapest way to get insurance?
1. If I go multicar can I start my wife's insurance a day early to match my date (car can be off road for a bit) - will this affect NCB since it will be a day shy of a full year?
2. Can I persuade an insurance to accept my NCB from 4 years ago?
3. Would I be allowed to have wife as main driver (due to 5 years NCB), I believe this may be called fronting but I can get her to drive to her parents every weekend in my car - that would be more miles than my weekly work mileage!
4. Any particular insurers that would be good for multiple cars?
5. Any particular models of car that is cheap on insurance? I was looking at a Ford Fiesta.
Thanks in advance.

In my experience, multi-car policies often aren't cheaper - especially when one car is a "banger" and requires business cover.
Your wife couldn't use her 5 years NCB on 2 cars at the same time. Anyway, even if your wife was technically the main driver (i.e. drives "your" car 30 miles a week as opposed to you driving 25) I would imagine the the bulk of the quote cost will be reflecting that a named driver is using the vehicle for business.
The sort of cars that people think are cheap to insure (Ka's, Fiesta's, 106's, Saxo's etc.) Often aren't - try getting some dummy quotes for larger cars that don't appeal to boy racers and new drivers.0 -
Some insurance companies will give a discount on a second policy in the family - but still no NCB if one is not due (LV for one). With others there is the possibility of an introductory discount
You'll need to shop around to see which is cheaper - separate companies or the same0 -
When I was in the same position, my wife was with Aviva. They agreed to put me on the equivalent of 5 years no claims as long as I agreed to stay with them for two years. If I left after a year, the letter to the next insurance company would say "1 year NCD". Sounded a very fair deal to me.0

Didn't reply to this thread for may be useful to others;
I ended buying a up buying a Ford KA (2000 model) which passed it's MOT 2 days prior and only had 50K miles for an excellent price. We also went for Aviva's multicar, for one reason only. The fully comprehensive multicar price was the equivalent price of my wife's car on its own from the cheapest insurer (Tesco). Oddly enough my wife's car on its own with Avivia was more expensive!
Effectively, my KA's insurance was free. So perhaps Multicar can be a money saver.0
