Oops! Syncing iPad for iTunes

I thought I was doing fairly well . After it seems managing to get itunes up on to my lap top looking at afew help desks I thought I had managed to sync music on lap top into iPad. Except its done it the other way round. I can see my purchases from itunes on my lap top but not the music in my lap top in itunes on the iPad. And I cannot see how to to do it. Or what do do next. Been at it for hours now. Sigh! Thanks
