Hi all I have query i recently accidentally broke my samsung 51d6900 plasma tv. It is an active 3d smart tv with BBC Iplayer, itv catch up 4od and five catchup. I payed £1200 for it 31/2 years ago. I contacted my insurance company and they accepted the claim. Problem is they cant get me a 51" plasma tv of same spec so they are offering me a 50"led for around £900. I went to look at the tv they offered and explained my situation, he showed me the tv and to be frank it was rubbish. He then proceeded to tell me that the tv i was replacing was a plasma and that to get the equivalent in led i would be looking at tvs in the £1500 + bracket. He showed me the difference and i tend to agree with him. I contacted my insurance company and explained this to them and said that I think they should go up to the 55" seen as they cant replace my 51". He told me this wasnt going to happen. I feel let down as they cant offer me a set the same as mine and in my opinion they should go up to the 55" as this would still be within the maximum per item. I asked them to just repair my old tv and they cant.
I asked about a cash settlement and the most they would give is £730 minus my £50 excess.
In my policy it states like for like new for old and they clearly arent offering me this. Its not a samsung they are offering me and it doesnt have all the catch up tv channels plus its not the same size.
Where do i go from here any advice greatly appreciated. Oh and takes me on average 60 mins to get through to there claim centre. Not a a happy bunny nor are my kids looking at a 24" tv from 10ft away. Thanks in advance.

A £900 TV today to replace a £1200 TV bought 3.5 years ago would sound reasonable.
The way technology is these days, it is very difficult to replace exactly new for old.
If you want a bigger TV then it would include an element of betterment so you could offer to pay the difference.0 -
It might sound reasonable if it were a samsung tv, but its not this is not like for like as samsung is the only one to have all the catchup channels and this is what we want on a tv.0

They've got the cash settlement wrong. If they can't supply a like for like replacement they can't deduct their discount....so you are entitled to the full £900 (less excess).
I agree with rs65....you could pay the difference and ask them to supply the bigger tv....they should give you the benefit of their discount so your contribution will be a bit smaller than you think.
Good luck0 -
If it is new for old surely they should get you a new Samsung plasma. They are widely available. Does your policy include a deduction for wear and tear?0

With anything that is seasonal or technology based it is almost always impossible to do an absolutely identical replacement and so "like for like" isnt generally taken to mean identical but equiv. What exactly is equiv is evidently subjective.
I cant see any justification of saying a 55" TV is closer to a 51" one than a 50" is.
To the OP - can the supplier not provide a PS51F5500? I would argue that this is the closest model from Samsung's current plasma range. Arguably one step lower by being in the 5000 range rather than 6000 but being F rather than D its two years newer which should easily balance out the range change.
You can pick one up for about £700 right now as the 2014 H models come out in a months time or so and so even with the discounted cash settlement of £730 you can get one0
