Tax credits - will I get penalty fine?

Hi everyone,
I started a new job last May but didn't tell the tax credits people. If I ring them now to explain my change in circumstances is there a chance they'll give me a penalty fine for not telling them sooner?
Obviously when I fill in my renewal pack soon they will see my income has increased in the last year. Is it best to come clean now or wait for the renewal pack? I'm thinking if I ring them now I can get the tax credits stopped and wont have as much of an overpayment to pay back, but what are the chances of getting a penalty fine?
