but they still want to extort £20 for it ,and the cost of motoring is allready high

So that we've got this in perspective, you have a problem with the £20 renewal once per decade of your photocard driving licence?

    Two quid per year.
    Less than 17p per month.
    Less than 4p per week.
Just over half a penny per day.

So that a quick glance can show whether a licence really DOES belong to the person claiming it?

    Riiiiight.

Rename the site, guys. Flopsy's Penny-Pinching Expert.

As of next year, the non-photocard licences will cease to be valid.

It is the paper counterpart of the photo licence that is planned to be phased out by next year, not the old style paper licences.

No, only the photocard counterpart by next year. The old style paper licence is planned to be phased out later, but no date has yet been given.

    <googles a bit harder> Ah, OK - my confuzzlement.

Still, with north of 30m out of 35m total licences now being photocards, and non-photocards being only held by people who've not changed their address since before 1998 and are under 70, it won't be too long, if only by natural causes.
