Lose CTC at 16?

I get CTC for my son who will be 16 next January.
On the forecast for next years credit I lose a third.
He is staying in full time education and I will be retired on the state pension.:(
Have I got it wrong?

You receive child tax credits until 31st August following the child's 16th birthday.

In some circumstances you can continue to claim until the child is 20. If he is staying in full time education you need to call them (I think any time from mid April) and inform them what type of course he will be doing. Only non-advance course count.

Thank you, I've just checked that out. He's staying in full time education.
I don't understand why they are proposing to reduce my credit from 7th of April 2014 though.:( That's really going to hurt us

I think the forecast for the amount of tax credit you will receive next year is based upon the information held by HMRC at the moment. You will need to tell the HMRC that your child will be staying in full-time education (12 hrs a week or more), where they will be studying, which course/s they will study, when their course/s shall end and the qualification/exam grade they will receive when their course/s end. If these details are not yet known by you then you must notify the HMRC as soon as they are definite. If you fail to send in the details of the further education your child is to remain in then child tax credit will stop and you will need to call the HMRC with the relevant details of these courses + level/name of college/qualification gained at end of course/s which by that time your child would have started and you will know all that information. Any money owed to you from the time CTC is stopped and the date you surrender the required information will be back-dated as long as you contact them as soon as you realise your CTC isn't being paid. This is what happened for me personally and should be correct still. If I've given any wrong info then I apologise but this is how it stood regarding my CTC last year.

Hi, thanks for your help but I don't want to post my financial details on an open forum.....I called the CTC helpline and I think I understand whats going to happen but I will still lose some credit while my claim is updated as it can't be done in advance. I have to wait for the new tax year to start.

So I take it the drop in April wasn't due to your child but something else ?

I renewed the CTC that had stopped in September in late October as I wasn't then aware I had to apply for it to continue & just assumed it did. I had to provide the HMRC with full details of each course she is studying, the qualifications she would gain at the end of each course, the dates of the examinations which are taken at the end of the courses or the dates each course comes to an end. The courses which my Daughter is doing come to an end or have final examinations during April & this is the time when grades are given & applications made to get on the next level of the courses, apply to do another course starting in September or to leave full-time education, if she choses to take another course or level then my CTC will continue once I inform HMRC of her acceptance onto the courses by the college. If in April once her grades are known she decides not to take another level or course & opts to leave full-time education my CTC award will stop. April is the date I gave HMRC when they asked when her courses would end, maybe April is the cut-off point for HMRC somehow, it seems to be the right date for my CTC award to end anyhow. Oops before I forget to mention it, each place of further education be it college or 6th form there is usually an amount paid each term to the students who qualify for payments from the bursory fund, we were not given this information by the college & only discovered it once it was too late. I advise everyone to look into bursory payments as it seems there are many students eligible but not in receipt of them. Best of luck to you & your Son.

As a matter of interest my sons course ends in July at the end of the summer term.
Do his payments stop in July or continue until 31st August ?
