As some of you may remember I am sorting out my very old PC deleting stuff etc.

When I switch it on I get this message:

IMG_20140317_180439.jpgIMG_20140317_180439.jpg

So I press delete and it loads windows and works ok. Is it anything I need to worry about or should I just keep doing the same thing? I just dont want it to die on me before I finish sorting stuff out!

  • As it's an old PC I'd say it's more than likely the CMOS battery needs replacing and resetting.

It's probably the bios battery on the main board needing replacement. Cost is only a couple of quid.
Smile and be happy, things can usually get worse!

This is a guess - that looks like a pretty old machine and I'm wondering if the CMOS battery is going flat and has caused a minor corruption in the values stored. Is the date/time correct - a flat battery usually causes problems with the clock first.

Well there's three replies all agreeing. Must be a first on this board :)

Wow thank you all for your very quick replies!

For non techie me! Is bios / cmos the same thing?

Yes the time is wrong, is it essential to get one or should it keep working as it is?

** ps I am not being a tighta** just the hassle of opening it up etc! ** ;)

Actually the same error can be caused by trying to install a hackintosh variant OS.

Although my money is with you guys, CMOS battery (normally a CR3202) dead.

    It will keep working but

    1. Time will be wrong.
    2. It might not be optimised (although you will need to know the optimised settings to achieve this anyway). Sometimes if you enter the bios setup (press f1 in your case) it will have an optimised settings option.

The bios is the motherboard brains, it in effect initialises the hardware on startup before the OS takes over.
CMOS is a set of settings or variables that dictate how the PC is configured.

BIOS is firmware and is permanently coded. CMOS is written to a low powered chip which is why when the cmos battery dies the configuration is lost.

When you press F1, on the right hand side (of I assume a blue screen) is there "Load Optimised Defaults"

If so, that's the option you need.

But you need to replace the battery on the motherboard first.

The battery will cost around £1-3 depending on where you get it from

    Then just

    etc.
