I recently took my laptop to a repair shop as it kept switching off. The shop advised the motherboard needed repairing or replacing which would be a more permanent fix and is what I decided to do. Several factors (which I won't go into due to the length of explanation) have suggested that the laptop was not properly examined, I was automatically given the more expensive repair options and that the motherboard was not replaced. Further adding to my suspicions are customer reviews of the shop who have stated they were charged for replacement motherboards that were not installed.
I contacted consumer advice who said that I should return the laptop to the shop as it continues to switch off after many hours. I would understand the logic for this if I had paid for an item that turned out to be faulty however in this instance I believe that they have knowingly charged the most expensive repair option and that they have knowingly not carried out the work. It is this lack of confidence and trust in the shop that has made me so reluctant to return the laptop to them.
I have done some research into my rights and frankly it seems very grim. What I am looking for is advice on what I can do in these circumstances. Primarily I would like to know that if I obtained proof from the laptop manufacturer (at my own expense) that the motherboard had not been replaced would this change my consumer rights and allow me to get a refund rather than letting the shop re-examine the laptop. I ask this because in this case I would be asking for a refund for a product that was never installed?
I would really appreciate any help or advice on this matter.

My understanding (and I could be wrong) is that you would have to offer the shop the chance to put things right first.
What makes you think they didn't replace the motherboard?
Although I do agree with you, replacing the motherboard is probably the most expensive thing to do when a simple clean (or a change of the thermal compound on the processor) is more likely to prevent shutdowns after prolonged or intensive use.0
