British Gas Homecare. Are they trying to scare me to stay them?

British Gas came to check my boiler before it can be fully insured under their Homecare cover.
Engineer said my boiler is "at risk" as carbon monoxide gas is leaking outside but at the moment not leaking into the house. So they cannot cover my boiler until it is fixed. British Gas gave me various accounts of how customers are returning to British Gas because other companies are not fixing or servicing the boiler correctly.
I have now panicked and very distressed and got the boiler switched off by Gas & Co Safety & Emergency 0800 111 999 and then booked another engineer to check the boiler to make it safe. BGas says once the boiler is made fully safe then they will cover it.
Now thinking a bit more.........I now think that BGas could be exaggerating things so that I am scared and only feel that only they can fully maintain and repair my boiler.
What do you think? What is your experience?

If your boiler was a danger to life , they would have condemned it on inspection
sack them off the shysters and get a good local RGI guy in to take a look , ask friends and neighbours if they can recommend anyoneNever, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night.0 -
Sounds like BS to me let us know what your bloke says when he has had a look at it.Nothing to see here, move along.0

our boiler was put at risk by BG (not carbon monoxide mind you).
We were given a quote of 250 to bring it up to standard. A local engineer has since serviced and 'repaired' it for less than 100 quid.
I've since decided not to follow up BG's fine offer of homecare so they have sent me a full refund for the several months of cover I had already paid them.0 -
Be interested to see what your second opinion comes back with.... do share - I'm intrigued!
I have found BG to be utterly useless and not above quite sharp practice these days - great shame.
I found myself a local Gas Safe plumber, and he now does all works on my boiler. Will never go near BG again.0 -
CO leaking outside !!!! Yep that's exactly what comes out of the boiler flue, please let us know what the other guy saysI'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.
You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.0 -
No, you've misunderstood the engineer somewhere surely. Is the flue terminal close to an air vent or something?0

There's something wrong with the boiler if significant amounts of CO come out of the flue. It should be CO2 and water vapour. If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.0 -
Well there is an exact ratio of CO to CO2 that it must be under - ah maybe that's what we're looking at, is it failing the flue gas analyser (telegan) test?0

what would you call "significant amounts" of CO then ?I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

I would expect you to be able to tell us that. My understanding is that if the CO:CO2 ratio is more than about 0.008, then there is something seriously wrong with the boiler. If it sticks, force it.
