insurance on provisional

Options
I am looking to purchase a car soon and have done a few comparisons on insurance as a provisional licence holder. Upon research I have read a few references to prices staying the same after passing driving tests but very few name providers, those that do the company are quoting £1000+ (comparison sites are £450+). Could anyone recommend a provider for that wont charge a small fortune and wont increase when I pass my test?

Prices dont stay the same when you pass they go up.

When you are a learner you have to have an experienced driver with you who in theory should stop you doing something really stupid. After you've passed your out there on your own and so can do any stupid thing you want without anyone to remind you to check mirrors or which way round a roundabout you go etc.

How much difference it will make depends on your age. If you are a mature learner the difference isnt too much, the wifes went up about 7%. As a young driver the difference is much greater. In both cases you evidently have an admin fee to pay too.

You do need to check that the INSURER you are being placed with will accept you as a newly passed driver as some will insurer learners but not newly passed. I stress insurer because if you get two quotes from a broker, one as passed and one as provisional you may well find its a different insurer they are placing the business with.

My daughter went with Shiela's Wheels as a 17yo provisional holder £800 on a Fiat Punto. When she passed her test at 18 her insurance increased to £830.

Better still, instead of an instructor/parent in the car saying "Slow down, check your blind spot and watch out for these lights up ahead" you've potentially got several mates in the car saying "How fast can this go? Go on overtake - you've got miles." Again, most likely to be an issue if you're quite young.

Thank you, I've been on the phone to a couple who had reasonable quotes based on provisional. The first couple jumped quite considerably to over £1000 (1.3 c3) but I had a quote from Admiral which increased by £200ish

I still do, well, mate rather than mates as its only a 2 seater

Whilst my current insurer wants another £6,000 to add the newly qualified Mrs to the cover (current premium is £650) I know Admiral only was going to add an extra £50 on top of their basic premium of £750 without her.

It may be hard to argue for her not to be given the keys from August :o

The ones that wont go up after passing your test are probably the ones that charge the higher rates anyway.

So the premium with a provisional maybe the same as the premium for having just passed.

I used a company called Collingwood Learners for mine. Was ideal for me as I had a 10 month policy that earned me a year NCB at the end of it. They also do short term policies if you only need a policy for a few weeks.

    Would highly recommend them.

CHeck wiht confused.com mate a lot of my friends and colleagues have had best quotes from them.

Also recommend as above, the 10 month policies that award a years NCB.

    Admiral/elephant/Diamond definatley do them :)
I've been with admiral /elephant for almost 5 tyears now, not had any difficulties with them :)
  • It cost me £1000 to add my daughter as a named driver onto her mothers car as a learner.
When she passed they wanted another £1000.

    New drivers crash.
