Possible change of contract

Staff meeting last week to say we are in a deficit budget and changes to staffing is being looked at.
HR are in this week to discuss with manager.
The staff situation at the moment is 5 permanent staff, 4 fix term contracts which finish 31st March
I get the impression the manager wants us all to lose hours to keep things fair.
Can he do that?
Surely the fix term staff shouldn't have their contracts renewed first then if costs need cutting, look at the permenant staff??
Any advice?

Fixed term contract have the similar rights as permanent these days.
Non renewal would be a redundancy and if the jobs are the same you would all be in the pool.
Anyone with less than two years service could be let go for any(nearly) reason.
For the business keeping all the staff probably gives better cover for sick and holiday is cheaper than making people redundant and if things improve normal hours can be restored.
Time to look at negotiations and what people what as a group, fight the hours cut and probably look at redundancies.
Any cut in hours make sure it is temporary and does not effect any future redundancies, a common trick get people to cut hours then make them redundant so it costs less.
Also have get a no overtime policy in place if they cut hours.0 -
