Insuring against pet damage to home

My wife and I want to get a dog, the only thing holding us back is making sure we are covered in the event of the dog damaging the floor in our rental property. Our rental contents insurance does not cover us, insurance for pets we have looked at so far does not cover damage to floors or carpets in our home. Does anyone know of anywhere we could get insurance that would cover damage a very small dog might do?

Are you talking about your dog "attacking" the floor in a one off event or just the general wear and tear scratches that their nails will cause the floor?

I think the landlord wants insurance for any damage that is done that could ruin the floor or carpets. He did mention scratches, the last residents had a similar agreement with him when they got a much larger dog, which left no marks. Beginning to think they thought they had cover when they did not

You wont find cover just for general damages caused. Home insurance, like most, covers individual events and so if your dog bounds for the door every day causing scratches then you'd have to make a claim for each day you'd been there and pay the excess for each occasion too (and block yourself form having home insurance again due to the number of claims made for the next 3 years)

One offs, like major illness resulting in a ruined carpet or something of that like which is akin to dropping a glass of red wine. So not general wear and tear but crazy damage
