1.3 2002 Ford KA - engine over revving
Hi
I know it's possible to diagnose a problem precisely over the internet, but would be grateful about some suggestions on what this could be.
I've done a Google search about the issue I've got and most others have this problem when the clutch is depressed. Mine has it when I'm in gear and driving normally..
When I'm driving at a high speed for the gear I'm in (20 for 2nd, 30 for 3rd, 40 for 4th, 45+ for 5th), the engine makes a loud revving noise. I'm not sure exactly when it started doing this but it's definitely a lot louder than it used to be now.
It doesn't matter if I'm accelerating or just driving steady, it makes a loud noise either way.
Apart from the noise I haven't noticed any problems with the car.
When I got my car serviced the mechanic said it "might be" the gearbox but didn't really look into it too much. He said it wouldn't be worth getting a new gearbox because it would probably cost more than the car is worth.
Any ideas? (apart from the gearbox)
Thanks

Is it over revving or just making a noise?
If the former sounds like clutch is slipping.0 -

Making a noise.
Sorry, over revving is the wrong way of describing it. If you drive at too high a speed for the gear you're in, it sounds similar to that. Just a loud whirring noise.
But in 5th gear it's noisy from 45+.What will your verse be?

I don't think it can be anything other than the clutch slipping, if the clutch is fully engaged then there's a direct correlation between the engine revs and road speed.0

Get to 20mph, put in 5th gear and floor it. If engine revs but you don't go any quicker, or is really slow to pick up speed, its the clutch0

We had a 1.3 ka with this very same problem. Your clutch is slipping and needs replacing.
You'll be ok with it for a while longer but you're going to have to be easy on the accelerator instead of pushing down on it so far. Ours was like it for a year before we scrapped it (for other reasons) and we managed just by easing off the gas. We did however stop using it as our daily car.0
