Which is the most reliable/what a car garage uses to value a trade in?
CAP or Glass's?
Thank you.

It generally is down to personal preference, but it's also not unknown to use both. CAP to value the trade-in and The Bible to price it for retail. Most punters come to grief believing the numbers are static prices, the car also has to be assessed for damage/repairs to further chip the price.0

CAP is normally the base value of the car either trade or retail, whereas Glasses takes into account the car's specification and can be better if you have a highly spec'd car.
I would imagine most dealers would go off Cap trade0 -
If your trading in, then whichever is lower. If you are buying, then whichever is higher0

Then I will expect right bang in between the two prices.0 -
All the main dealers I have had trade in prices off have used Glass.
Only once I have ever been offered a trade in price using CAP and it was a garage that only dealt in 2nd hand cars, the trade in offered was very low as well.
The same car (Mini Cooper) was traded in at a main dealer for close on a grand more than the CAP valuation a few weeks later. Maybe there is some truth in the fact that Glass values the individual car, it did have the Chilli pack and a lot of other extras and very low millage.0 -
How long have you worked for them?0

Usual is to appraise the car then consult Glass Guide . Some dealers will also use CAP . If in doubt then they will contact one of the traders that buys their used cars . Generally speaking the traders are far more in tune with prices than any other source .
Value of any trade in is also going to depend upon how much profit is in the car that is being sold and how shiftable the trade in is .0
