Ryanair hand luggage

Options
Hi there,
we are travelling with ryanair (never flown with ryanair before)to costa del sol next month and know about the size and weight restrictions of your main hand luggage bag but only know a size for the second bag.
do they check your 2nd bag for size / weight?

Any other tips regarding ryanair hand luggage welcomed.
TIA:beer:

Unless they've made some recent changes, Ryanair only allow one piece of hand luggage per person, up to 10kg.

EDITED: Just checked and apparently they changed it at the end of last year: You'll be allowed to bring either a second, small carry-on bag (maximum size 35cm x 20cm x 20cm), or a duty-free carrier bag, alongside your main hand luggage bag.

No, they now allow an extra small bag. ie a small ladies handbag.

BTW if you turn up with 2 trolley cases, you are asking for grief

    First; enjoy your holiday- we flew last week to the Costa del Sol, and the weather was great, sunny, albeit a bit breezy by day (only a few brave souls swimming!) and cool at night but much better than UK- so here's hoping for sun next month. We flew BA, not Ryanair, to Malaga, but have flown dozens of times with ryanair in the past and never experienced problems with hand luggage which is all we ever take;

so you have done exactly the right thing by reading their FAQ on Cabin baggage' at as you obviously already have at
http://www.ryanair.com/en/terms-and-conditions#regulations-cabinbaggage which says (as Misty Blue has noticed)
"One cabin bag per passenger* weighing up to 10kg with maximum dimensions of 55cm x 40cm x 20cm, plus 1 small bag up to 35 x 20 x 20 cms."

They used to be a little inconsistent about enforcement, but tightened up in recent years, with some Spanish and Italian airports size-gauging and weighing every carry-on, while others turned a blind eye, and the policy at Stansted still seems to be that they only pull out those people bags which look obviously over-size as you walk into their wing of the departures area.

The duty free shop at Malaga had signs all over the place advertising the new 'small second bag' policy as hitherto, you could only buy booze if you could stick it into your hand-luggage airside; with consequent risk of exceeding the 10 kilo weight limit.

But, to return to your original question -
"do they check your 2nd bag for size / weight?"
...as there is no limit in their T&C, the answer is
-a) size; maybe, so I'd stick too the limit, but
    -b) no.
Being realistic, unless you're smuggling gold bars, and assuming you can carry your extra small bag, there's no way they can even notice let alone ban a heavy one.

So, as you already know what to do, and assuming you PRINT YOUR BOARDING CARDS at home prior, give yourself enough time to use the baggage drop for any checked-in bags, get through security (which can take 20 minutes at busy times at Stansted, for example), walk through the terminal (which again, can take 15 minutes at Stansted or Gatwick for example) and buy a sandwich at Pret (nicer than Mr O'Leary's ones!), you'll be fine.

It's only people who disobey the T&C who get hit with heavy financial penalties for lost boarding cards, oversized/overweight cabin bags who rant about Ryanair. And their on-time record is great; I've only ever been let down twice in up to 100 flights - once by an air traffic control strike in France which cancelled my return from Girona, and when a terrorist alert closed all London airports for two days late last century; neither were the airline's fault, but on both occasions they gave me free alternative return flights which is more than Eurostar did when I was stuck in Brussels by the tunnel fire. (maybe I'm not the world's luckiest traveller?)

    Hasta luego; buen viaje

As above it needs to be a small handbag or a carrier bag from the duty free. A large satchel style bag won't be allowed, nor will what i call a 'man bag' (again like a school satchel size). I usually buy a bottle of water from duty free and ask for a carrier bag then dump my handbag, magazines and usually a sandwich in there.

Thanks for the info everyone, I'm sure I feel a bit more comfortable about what to take although a bit surprised that lea2012, you think a man bag would not be allowed, if it comes within the size constraints for the 2nd bag or do you think it would be not permitted if it had a shoulder strap rather than a handle.

As long as the 'man bag' is the same size as a small handbag then that won't be an issue, but my partner and other male relatives that I know usually take a bigger satchel style bag that I think would be too big.

I think the rule is that you can take a second bag, but if push comes to shove it has to be able to fit in to the main bag if needed. I don't know any exact measurements so I would suggest calling ryanair to find out for certain.

it gives exact measurements of the second bag on the Ryanair website and don't think it has to fit in the other cabin luggage

I travelled Ryanair yesterday from Lanzarote and the staff made a great show of moving the measuring apparatus, which consists of a space for both bags, right to front of boarding area. There is a notice on these that states the size to check baggage is larger than the actual allowed measurements. However, having checked my bags at Stansted before departure, and both bags measured under, it still seemed a pretty tight fit. I had become a bit obsessed and paranoid and worried about straps and handles being included and having to pay extra £50 that I actually took a tape measure on holiday! However, despite the great show of putting the apparatus right in your face, and the never ending emails, the staff did not actually check anyone's luggage - maybe because flight was delayed. Just stick within measurements (best to have rigid suitcase and 'floppy' handles on second bag) and stuff your pockets!
