ive just sold my house which i lived in for seventeen years.i paid ppi on the mortgage which i used a few times when i was off work,can i claim back any of the rest of the ppi which i paid.

No. You cant just claim it back. You would be making a formal complaint against the seller of the policy giving reasons (and evidence typically in the case of MPPI) for why you believe it was mis-sold or unsuitable for you.
As you have used it several times to claim on then clearly you have no complaint reasons about eligibility, suitability or financial need.
