Hi
My house sale is just about complete and looking at an exchange of contracts date.
However, my solicitor has written to me about different things but also in it is something that one of the searches has thrown up about the possibility of having to pay upkeep of a local church.
They have aske dthe seller, who is selling it as his mother has passed away if they will provide an insurance policy against this.
Has anyone got any views, ideas about this please?
Someone at work told me they once watched a programme with something similar and it cositng the occupants over 100,000.
Please tell me it's not that bad and how to find out more.
Would I have problems or have to pay an insurance policy when I come to sell it in the future.
Thanks for any help/advice
Jules

If you do a search on this particular board "chancel repair liability" comes up frequently.
I also watched a similar program and have to say watching such a program would make you run a mile from any house near a church. It also seems to me that as the Church of England is currently not as rich as it was it is doing everything in its power to get money out of people it use to ignore/help to pay it's pension fund, pay it's clergy and repair buildings i.e. chancel repair, selling off social housing, selling of normal rented accommodation.I'm not cynical I'm realistic

It's not about being near a Church, pretty much any house in the country could be tied back to being part of a parish if need be, the geography of the area is irrelevant. The liklehood of anything coming to a head with this however is another question altogether0
