Having A new Street Address

Hey,

the house I recently bought extends to a street on both sides front and back. There is an address on the first street (at the front). However, the garden and space in the back lend themselves very well to carving out a space for being developed into a mini parking lot. This is something that I'd like to do. And I am currently accessing the property on this side anyway/

After doing this, really the main entrance and gateway to the property will be what is now the back...

The two streets however, are very far apart in terms of their access. To get from the back to the front. I'd have to drive around approx 800 yards.

This is a problem when I'd like deliveries to be delivered to the back of the property.

Some delivery companies will accept instructions, but they either ignore it or it's just too complicated - i.e. drive down 400 yards down that street, our property is the one by the oak tree... blah blah...

I'd like to solve this by either having a new address to the back of the property (preferably) or moving my address to that. There are other houses with numbers on the back street.

Is there any process for doing this, and how should I approach it?

...then just wait for the planning letters, the council tax bills etc all to roll in for the "new address". Then all the online suppliers who won't send to a diffferent address to your card.

Honestly? If it were me, I'd be stepping RIGHT back from the can of worms, and putting a sign on the front gate saying "Courier: Please deliver to back gate <little map>", and a sign on the back gate saying "Rear access for <normal address>"
  • Is your rear entrance ('scuse me) in a road with an existing name? If so, give your access point a name. i.e. "Sea View" or "Old Oaks" or even a number that doesn't clash with any existing numbers.

Put a sign there (which can be easily read from a truck. Then use this new name then road name, then the postcode. (There will almost certainly be an existing postcode that covers that part of the street). + give suppliers postcode for satnav reference.

DON'T bother to contact the council - you will only alert them unnecessarily.

You have to comply with the local Council's street name and numbering policy. Royal Mail will now only accept the instructions of an address from the local authority, and if you are not in the Postcode database, then you will be unable to get credit in the future.

Well I've been doing this for years and it hasn't affected my credit. I just put the official address as my home address, credit card address etc, then put the alternative address as the delivery address.

So I have for example Rose Cottage, High Street, MyTown, TL5 4PN as my official Royal Mail address, and I use this as my Billing address when ordering. But the 'back' of my house faces onto Low Street, so I put my delivery address as Rose Cottage, Low Street, MyTown TL5 3QR. I found the postcode on the Royal Mail postcode finder online. If they can't find your house-name at that postcode, there's always an option to manually add it. I make sure there's a house-name sign prominently displayed on Low Street. And it's never been a problem. If anyone did query it, I would say I'm doing them a favour because there's no parking on High Street but loads of parking and turning space on Low Street.

Hi, I changed mind from front to back. I contacted the council. One phone call, one form completed. After two weeks I received notification from Royal Mail stating my new postcode. All official.
